Week 8 Assignments

Part I:
For the skill id like to create is a bit of another branch of receiving your daily news. Now a days there is plenty of conversation about what is real news and what is “fake” news. I’d like to create a skill that can gather news from a pool of diverse news organizations (i.e., The Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera, Fox). I chose this skill to tackle the notion that there is fake news being published and that we can’t trust certain news organizations. With this wide pool of news organizations news we can present all sides of a story, so that we can decide for ourselves what we chose to believe. This skill will read “trending news” that are occuring the very same day you’re asking alexa. As news organizations update their stories online, this skill will update itself to make sure you are being informed of all the latest news. You will also have the option to hear the broadcast of a certain story if it is available which will hopefully add diversity to the skill so that you are not always hearing Alexa’s voice. The skill will also have an integrated system where you can save the stories you feel that are most important and will send them to your email so you can read at a later time. The customers for this skill can be anyone and anybody who wants to really know what’s going on in the country and around the world without having to worry about credibility. You will get a variety of news with different viewpoints which will be a way we can present unbiased news. The person using this skill will have a unique way to interacting with the news by having Alexa send you alerts of anything major that you might need to know that is either happening locally or elsewhere. The skill will send you text messages of any life threatening, natural disaster, or breaking news. While you are using the skill you will have options to hear a corresponding broadcast to each story heard if available by news organization. While you are away, the skill is constantly updating itself and gathering new information from the news outlets that are being shared in the skill. This skill will present news from various points of views in hopes to inform the average customer fair and clear information regarding important issues/topics in today’s world. This skill will hopefully ease the conversation that people are being fed lies on the news, this variety of news one can distinguish for themselves what is true and what is not. The name of this skill will be called the Distinct Report.
Part II:

Part III:
Alexa pitch graph
Part IV:
For the distinct report skill it will gather its information from the news organizations that will have their stories read such as, The Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera, Fox. When asking for what’s trending, Alexa would gather whatever is trending on twitter and will read out to you whatever is trending that exact day. Alexa will use its own voice only if the news outlet does not have a corresponding broadcast. This will hopefully get news organizations to begin to voice recording their stories with any anchor of their choosing to add interest to the story. A mix of both.

Gun Violence Interview (revised)

INTRO:
THE CONTROVERSIAL DEBATE OVER JUST HOW MUCH OR IF AT ALL TO CONTROL GUNS HAS SPURRED MANY STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO LOUDLY DEMAND THAT CONGRESS TAKE ACTION TO BAN SOME GUNS. THIS COMES AS THE ANOTHER MASS SHOOTING TOOK PLACE AT A FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL LAST MONTH.

HOST: SOFTWARE ENGINEER AT SAN JOSE STATE, DEV PATEL BELIEVES THAT NEWER GUN LAWS CAN SAVE LIVES.

“If there’s reform it will save another mass shooting from happening and I think reforming to the sense that taking away all assault rifles and keeping it to single stack handguns will be more than proficient”

HOST: FIRST YEAR NURSING STUDENT, MICHAEL GOFF BELIEVES THAT TENSIONS WILL EASE AND PEOPLE CAN HOPEFULLY FEEL SAFE ONCE AGAIN.

Michael
“If a gun reform happens very soon or immediately a lot of the debates and the riots that are currently happening over the whole gun violence issue will come to an end as well as a lot of the people in schools such as students and teachers will feel a lot more safe if there’s a gun reform”

IN THE MIDST OF THE GUN REFORM DEBATE, FLORIDA LAWMAKERS VOTED TO ENACT NEW GUN CONTROL MEASURES THAT WOULD RAISE THE AGE TO BUY FIREARMS FROM 18 TO 21 AND REQUIRE A THREE DAY WAITING PERIOD FOR MOST WEAPONS. WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF THE WHITE HOUSE WILL FOLLOW WITH SIMILAR ACTIONS. REPORTING FROM SAN JOSE STATE, OMAR PEREZ.

Week 5 Assignment Task 5

In today’s day in age there are far more information the average person needs to know than ever before. With so much going on in someone’s day the goals we set out for oneself can go unmet. I would like to create a skill that would help out anybody and everybody make sure they meet those goals. Far too many people live an unhealthy lifestyle and depressed or anxiousyikes!.

I want to create a skill that will help you not only remind yourself daily of your goals but help you make those goals possible. Alexa would be synced to your alarm and the first thing you would hear is your goals you set for the week. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds in a month then Alexa would be your personal trainer ooh la la!

Good morning, Carlos.

Here is today’s goals. Make sure to eat 2,500 calories throughout the day, drink a gallon by the end of the day, and be ready for your Biology final at 5 this evening.

Holy crap. I totally forgot I had my final today.

Alexa, is my final cumulative or only based on the second half of the semester.

Your biology final will consist of 50 multiple choice questions and three essay questions that are all derived from the last six weeks of class.

phew!Thank God, I will head to school early and catch up on the material I need to know.

Wait, I can’t forget my gallon of water.

Gun Violence Interview

Intro:

It seems like every time we turn on the t.v. there’s another mass shooting. The most recent occured in Florida at a high school where 19 year old Nikolas Cruz took the lives of 17 people. The country has responded with force and wants to see change in current gun laws.

I wanted to turn the question about gun laws here in the country to San Jose State students and here I have Michael who is a nursing major second year and I wanted to ask him…

Me:
Michael what do you think about the current gun laws here in the U.S.?

Michael:
“I do believe that the next step is to really decide whether or not they need to up protection at some of these schools and at some public spaces or to try to eliminate some of these gun laws completely”

Me:
I wanted to ask again a San Jose State student here, Dev Patel…
How important is it for those in washington dc to make some type of changes now?

Dev:
“If there’s reform it will save another mass shooting from happening and I think reforming to the sense that taking away all assault rifles and keeping it to single stack handguns will be more than proficient”

Me:
Should anyone still own assault weapons, do you think some people have the right to have those?

Dev:
“I really feel like there’s no real reason to have those really in today’s society”

Me:
As it stands now there is no change to our current gun laws, we will have to wait and see from our current Republican leadership if we will see any. Thank you for listening.

Week 4 Assignment Task 2 (omar)

What do you do after something so traumatic? How do you ease your way back into everyday normal life?

Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida are now finding a way to make sense of what occurred almost a week ago. . Last Wednesday a gunman entered the high school and began to unload his weapon, . Students who managed to survive the shooting are finding ways to cope with the horrific event that also took the lives of two beloved faculty and staff. Survivors have now rallied in wake of this event to put the pressure on the Trump administration to do something about gun laws. Many other schools around the nation and in the Bay Area are coming together to advocate for change.

“I believe that we as the younger generation need to lead this force to bring stricter laws for owning a gun. We are the ones getting shot at and killed”.

In support with the Parkland students advocating for change, many San Jose State students also believe that it is up to the younger generation to really push for change. Current gun laws are outdated and need to be changed. In the last ten years the U.S. has had the top five deadliest shootings in its modern history.

Alexa New Skill

Carlos, has been in the United States for almost a year now since moving from Guatemala. He is a SJSU student  majoring in engineering.  It has not been easy moving from a different country and balancing all the new changes in his life. From getting used to his surroundings and going to school, it can get hectic. Since attending SJSU Carlos has joined a fraternity on campus and has managed to be involved in the engineering department.

At times Carlos can forget when he has to do certain things with all the things he has to juggle. I would like to build a skill that can sync into his calendar and make sure not only is Alexa reading out loud his schedule in the morning but also sends alerts to his phone. A way to set an alarm and as soon as the alarm is snoozed Alexa would list all the things on the calendar according to each day. This skill will also have the ability to send alerts when things change in the schedule that way if you’re a busy person like Carlos you can stay informed on what you need to get done.

Assignment #1

I was first curious how Alexa can let me know the top headlines I need to know for the day. I chose the CNN flash briefing skill. Right away CNN told you that these were the top news headlines you needed to know. Right away they gave out the news in like bullet form, so one right after the other. I’m really into international news and I wanted to see if this skill would just choose certain news to give out. CNN does a good job at making sure they inform you on whats happening around as well. They gave a good range of interviews but I would’ve liked if they had a news story for each category (i.e. a&e, news, sports, etc.)

Second, I set up my Uber account to my amazon and was able to order myself a ride relatively fast. I wanted to see just how easy it was to get a ride from Alexa. Initially I was asked to set up my account to amazon that way they can charge me. It was actually pretty cool simply because while I was getting ready Alex informed me when my ride was at my location. I simply wanted to see how easy it was to order a ride since there is times where my friends and I go out and to check out if either ordering on my phone is easier or Alexa. I choose Alexa.

Music is such an instrumental part of my life that I wanted to see how easy it can be to use Alexa. By default Alexa is programed to play amazon music, but since I have a Spotify account I wanted to play my music from there. When I asked Alexa to play my Spotify music she first asked me to set up my Spotify account through the Alexa app. From there it was simple as asking Alexa to play your favorite playlist. It has been one of my favorite skills simply because it is so easy to play music without ever using your phone.
